Land Rover to move Discovery production to Slovakia from Solihull

While putting any jobs at risk is always always a bad thing, it's significant that JLR has moved its successful Land Rover Discovery to Slovakia, but kept production of its forthcoming flagship and electrified cars - a hugely important phase for the company - in the UK.

The big move could result in job losses in the United Kingdom, the company warned, although JLR says it remains "committed to the UK".

Why is Land Rover moving Discovery production to Slovakia? This will be due to the crossover delay in Slovakian production beginning next year, and the redevelopment of the Solihull plant which is already underway.

"The decision to move the Land Rover Discovery to Slovakia and the potential losses of some agency employed staff in the United Kingdom is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally".

The company, owned by Tata Motors Ltd, will create a new factory platform at its Solihull, U.K., plant that will enable the production of cars in electric, petrol and diesel versions, said people familiar with the matter, asking not to be named because the information isn't public.

The Discovery has been made at Solihull since it was first launched by Land Rover in 1989 and is now in its fifth generation. It means the company's Solihull and Halewood plants will remain at the cutting-edge of its long-term strategy.

It stressed that it remains committed to the United Kingdom as it outlined plans to invest hundreds of millions in upgrading its plants in Solihull and Halewood to build to the next versions of hybrid and electric Range Rover models.

Last month, the company said fourth-quarter pretax profit halved to £364m on revenues of £7.6bn as demand for diesel vehicles slumped.

The company has also blamed Brexit for hitting demand in Europe's second-largest autos market, where demand fell 6 percent a year ago, a source told Reuters in April.

"From the 2019 model year, Land Rover has rationalised its Range Rover Evoque body style offering to concentrate on the five-door model and convertible, which account for the majority of sales", a spokesperson for the Whitley-based brand said, according to Autocar.

In 2014 the automaker started production outside the United Kingdom for the first time when versions of the Rover Range Rover Evoque started rolling out of a plant in China. JLR also builds the SUV in Changshu, China.
