After shaking hands again with Kim in front of the cameras, Trump gave a thumbs-up before starting the first meeting between an incumbent USA president and a DPRK leader.

Starting with a handshake, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made history Tuesday as they began their unprecedented summit aimed at staving off the threat of nuclear war.

Kim and President Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of Tuesday's historic summit.

Lifting sanctions could be a win for North Korea - possibly enough to show some success from this first meeting in Singapore, Gregg added.

"If diplomacy does not move in the right direction, those measures will increase", he said.
