Awarded full member status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) alongside Ireland in June previous year, Afghanistan became the 12th test-playing nation after first being recognised by the ICC in 2001.

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan slammed a magnificent century on the opening day of the historic one-off Test between India and Afghanistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

"I congratulate the people of Afghanistan as their cricket team plays their first worldwide test match. Rashid is one bowler, who can adjust (to the longer format), but test match is a different ball game", the former Mumbai batsman said.

Cricket was tolerated by the Taliban during their harsh Islamic rule from 1996 to 2001. In a tweet, PM Modi wrote, "I congratulate the people of Afghanistan as their cricket team plays their first global test match". India had scored 200 for the loss of just one wicket in the early afternoon.

"We also request other test cricketing nations to arrange regular series with Afghanistan". Modi said on Twitter.

Afghan stars Rashid and Mujeeb enjoyed fruitful campaigns in the IPL, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab respectively.

"This match is a result of huge goodwill and solidarity between the two countries", one senior diplomat said. The people of India have shared the joys of millions of Afghans and the success of the players in tournament in India and elsewhere.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said it is a matter of pride and honour for India to host Afghanistan's maiden Test match and paid tribute to the war-ravaged country's indomitable spirit.
