"Congratulations - a great deal of hard work!"

"In 1994 in the United States, you would go out onto the street and nobody knew who Diego Maradona was", he said.

The "United Bid" projected that its tournament would generate more than $5 billion in short-term economic activity, including the creation of 40,000 jobs and more than $1 billion in incremental worker earnings.

"It's not a huge order of magnitude compared to some of the other events that we've hosted in the past or that are being now discussed", Iveson said, referring to Calgary's pursuit to host the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Morocco appeared too hazardous as a potential host when all 14 venues had to be built or renovated as part of a $16 billion investment in new infrastructure.

The United States last hosted the men's World Cup in 1994.

"Our country is prepared to host the World Cup".

Herdman said there is precedent for the nations involved in joint bids being granted entry, pointing to Japan and South Korea in 2002.

Meaning even if you know nothing at all about the game, the sport, the event, you can still sound like an absolute expert by confidently telling your friends that the victor will definitely be one of those who've either been there and done it or won it before.

Wednesday's vote may trigger a new approach to hosting the tournament, with countries banding together to share existing resources. The president has regularly assailed world leaders, including allies like Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Emmanuel Macron, for "ripping" America off over trade.

The last time the USA hosted the World Cup was in 1994, with Brazil winning the tournament at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be used at the FIFA World Cup for the first time, after being tested at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and used at top leagues in Italy and Germany. It is expected that all three nations will automatically qualify, but that has not been made official.

The vote, which occurred a day before the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation, is also the first time three nations have been selected to co-host a Cup and the first time it will be played in North America since the United States hosted in 1994.

Soccer is Mexico's national sport, but is still considered a niche sport in the United States and Canada. MLS commissioner Don Garber called it "a monumental step in our collective mission to further advance the game of soccer in North America" and added "there's no doubt that World Cup 2026 will elevate the sport of soccer to entirely new levels".

"We believe this event will become a lightning rod".

Thirty-two national teams are participating in the World Cup football championships in Russian Federation. The U.S. will host 60 games, Canada 10 games and Mexico 10 games.

The 87,000-capacity MetLife Stadium outside NY - home of the NFL's Giants and Jets - is proposed for the final. Then the remaining four teams will play, with the winners securing the final two spots in the tournament.
