White House slams Canadian PM Justine Trudeau; accuses him of betrayal

Lucey reported from Singapore and Gillies from Quebec City.

It came in response to what he claimed were "false statements" by Canadian premier Justin Trudeau.

Freeland, asked about support from allies, said: "The position of our European allies, including Japan, is the same as ours". "We are very measured".

The motion calls on the House to recognize the importance of Canada's "long-standing, mutually beneficial trading relationship" with the US, "strongly oppose" the "illegitimate tariffs" imposed on steel and aluminum, stand "in solidarity" with the Trudeau government's decision to impose retaliatory tariffs and remain united in support of the supply management system of regulating Canada's dairy and poultry industry. "Not just the United Kingdom, but Canada, Germany, Japan - these aren't foes, these are friends", he told The Associated Press at a technology conference.

Trump said the United States has been subjected to unfair trade duties for many years.

Canadian officials, including Trudeau, have fanned across America as part of a months-long charm offensive to appeal to pro-trade Republicans at every level.

Members of Trump's inner circle continued the attacks, with both chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow - who said that Trudeau had "stabbed us in the back" - and Peter Navarro, Trump's trade adviser, directing a series of stinging comments at the Canadian leader.

"I know it didn't look friendly", Trump said.

After Trump departed for Singapore for a highly anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trudeau criticized Trump for triggering a trade dispute and said Canada would retaliate with tariffs against the U.S. Now there is a question mark over that.

In a news conference June 9 shortly before his departure from Quebec, Trump brings up his problems with trading with his friends - "It's going to change, a hundred per cent".

Reneging on the commitments agreed in the communique showed "incoherence and inconsistency", it said in a statement. Nearly 70 percent of the steel used in the United States already is produced here, and our nation can never be self-sufficient in aluminum production because the bauxite used to make the metal is not mined here.

"This is of great concern to the G7".

"Navarro himself crossed a line, basically telling a leader of a foreign nation that he needs to go to hell.I don't care how mad, how angry you are, you don't treat the head of state of another country like that unless you are getting ready for a military engagement of some kind". "It is impossible to predict what Trump will do next", said a senior G7 official on the summit outcome.

"We have states that depend on Canada as their largest export market - over 30 states in fact".

The announcement came after the president left the summit, which while in attendance he had announced he wants to put an end to the United States' status as the world's "piggy bank" and suggested eliminating trade barriers between allies.

"The G20 helpfully has more countries that have a stake in the economy of the world, including the G7", he told Reuters. While sending their product into our country tax free.

"We are convinced that a modernization is perfectly possible, we are convinced that common sense will triumph", she said.
