Sheriff: 1 Kan. deputy killed, 1 critical in shooting

A sheriff's deputy was killed and another is in critical condition after both were shot Friday morning in Kansas City, Kansas, while taking inmates to a hearing, KMBC-TV reported.

Major Kelli Bailiff, of the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office, said it was possible the deputies were shot with their own weapons.

The suspect was also shot during the incident and was taken to an area hospital for surgery.

According to police, the two deputies were possibly shot with their own guns.

Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, was killed Friday morning outside the county courthouse annex.

Police in Kansas City are facing tough questions after shooting and killing three people in less than an hour.

The wounded deputy, who is female, was in critical condition, Bailiff said.

A spokesman for Wyandotte County, Edwin Birch, previously told CNN the shooting occurred inside the court services building, and that a juvenile had also been shot. Police Officer Zac Blair said authorities were reviewing surveillance video.

Blair added to the Star that police were not looking for any other suspects and that the incident "is contained".

"Sending prayers to the officers, families and Wyandotte SO", the office said.

Police haven't released any further information about the shooting.

Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle tweeted out a statement saying she was "heartbroken for the families of the deputies, the Wyandotte Sheriff's Department, and for the entire community".

Officers became involved in a standoff with Fulkerson just after 1 p.m. Thursday in the area of N.E. 38th Street and N. Jackson Avenue after they were called to the area to check on a woman with a sword. Their conditions are unknown. Details of what led to the shootings are not yet available.
