After the deaths by suicide of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, calls and texts to crisis hotlines spiked dramatically.

There is also a stigma that surrounds the topics of depression and anxiety that makes it hard for people suffering from mental illness to talk about.

The hospital's annual meeting is also an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments of the past year and offer a heartfelt thank you to staff and volunteers, as well as the many partners, donors and community members dedicated to reducing stigma associated with mental illness.

The majority of those who take their own life suffer from a mental health issue such as depression or anxiety, U.S. health officials say, but other factors include loneliness, the loss of a job or a loved one and the breakup of a relationship.

"If I find out that somebody in the person's life has committed suicide, that is a strong data point".

In 2016, almost 45,000 Americans 10 or older died by suicide, according to the CDC.

We should think about suicide prevention much like we think about prevention of heart disease, suggested Dr. Christine Moutier, a psychiatrist who serves at the chief medical officer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Young people, who can be influenced, are more vulnerable to copycat suicides, especially after a celebrity takes his or her own life.

Husband Andy Spade said the designer was being treated for depression and anxiety, adding that he moved out ten months earlier when the two parted ways.

Unfortunately, suicide is occurring more frequently, not less, both locally and across the country.

Mental health does not encompass suicidal thoughts or depression but overall happiness and joy in a person.

At Family & Children's Services in Tulsa, mental health professionals answered about 60 percent more calls last week as compared to the week before.

"I was grown up and a hundred miles away", she said.

Several high-profile suicides have been the focus of a national conversation, and recent numbers show that the rate in New Hampshire is up almost 50 percent over the past 20 years.
