‘He is a hero’: Armed civilian kills gunman at Tumwater Walmart

Upon arriving, officers found a 16-year-old girl suffering from minor injuries.

Laura Wohl, a Tumwater Police spokesperson, said the gunman shot the owner of the auto he was trying to steal. "(The suspect) hijacks a auto apparently to get here, then hijacks another vehicle.

It is not clear if the shooter ever entered the store, despite customers' reports that he had been, Wohl said.

Shots were fired at the Walmart in Tumwater at about 5pm local time (1am BST), according to reports.

The attacker, who police have not yet named, then went outside where he attempted to carjack a vehicle, say police.

An active investigation was underway Sunday at multiple scenes at or around the Tumwater Walmart.

While police said the shooting happened outside the Walmart, witnesses reported they could hear the shots from inside the store, which caused chaos and panic inside the retail outlet. "And as he tried to hijack a second auto, a citizen who was in the parking lot took his gun and shot the suspect". Ran out a side emergency exit and attempted to run to my auto in the parking lot but heard 4 more pops in the lot.

The local fire department has called the shooting a "mass-casualty incident", according to local media. Police later determined that it was actually a carjacking, Wohl said.

Darren Gossler of Elma told the TNT that he was in the store when the shooting started.

Moments later she heard, "pop, pop, pop", and everyone froze, she said.

Witnesses told the Seattle Times that at least three civilians pulled guns in the parking lot.

Witness Brian Adams told KING5 TV that "this guy was randomly firing" both inside and outside the store. Police reported just two, one of whom fired at the suspect and killed him.

Investigators say the vehicle stolen during the earlier carjacking near the Toyota dealership was recovered in the Walmart parking lot.

"He is a hero", Adams said.

"We never want to see citizens put themselves in harm's way", she said of the citizen who shot the suspect, but, "in this case we don't know if he stopped the suspect from killing or hurting other people, and that can only be a good thing".
