Trump orders Pentagon to create ‘Space Force’ to get ahead of China

"You will be part of the five proud branches of the United States armed forces: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard", Trump said.

President Donald Trump is signing a new space policy directive at the White House that aims to reduce satellite clutter in space. "Very importantly, I am hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a Space Force as the Sixth Branch of the Armed Forces".

"And we're actually thinking of a sixth, and that would be the Space Force". Please refresh for updates.

In May, following an offhand comment by Trump about the possible creation of a Space Force, Sean O'Keefe, NASA administrator and Navy secretary under President George W. Bush, said Trump's own defense secretary and Air Force secretary argued vociferously against it when members of Congress pushed it past year.

A space force is created to ensure friendly use of space and conduct of outer space operations, care after military training missions and space warfare or any combat that may occur in space.

Also on Monday, Cheryl Warner, a spokeswoman for Nasa's Human Exploration Directorate, said that the United States plans to send robotic explorers to the moon as soon as next year as a preparatory step towards sending astronauts back there for the first time since 1972.

The White House past year also opposed the space corps plan and said creating it was "premature at this time".

Trump floated the idea in March and said that it was a joke at first. He said the new branch's creation will be overseen by Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. This document concerns monitoring objects in orbit and sharing the information so spacecraft can avoid collisions.

The United States wants to send robotic explorers to the moon as soon as next year as a preparatory step towards sending astronauts back there for the first time since 1972, a NASA official said on Monday. Trump is expected to sign the new space policy into effect Monday, as the National Space Council convenes.

Vice President Mike Pence heads the recently revived space council.
