XXXTentacion has been pronounced dead by the Broward Police Department after being shot in Florida on Monday.

Jahseh Onfroy, the rapper who went by XXXTentacion, was shot and killed in Florida on Monday.

They have since said they believe the incident was a possible robbery and are appealing for information.

In a statement, detectives said the rapper was approached by two armed suspects shortly before 4pm.

"He quickly became the most popular artist in the genre known as SoundCloud Rap, defined by its languid, hazy beats and wide-ranging influences", BBC reported. The Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed his death on Twitter.

His single "SAD!" had been listened to more than 173 million times on YouTube, and reached the top-10 of the Billboard Hot 100 list.

"According to Billboard, XXXTentacion recently earned his first No. 1 album on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart with "?", which debuted atop the list dated March 31. He was awaiting trial for that and other charges, including witness tampering.

The 20-year-old Florida native had been embroiled in legal problems over his alleged beating of a pregnant girlfriend.

The rapper is now awaiting trial on domestic violence charges and was recently freed by a judge after being incarcerated for witness tampering in the case.

The music-streaming service Spotify announced in May it was removing XXXTentacion's music from its curated and algorithmically generated playlists. Kanye West said he was "inspired" by XXXTentacion and added "thank you for existing".

Rapper J Cole hailed the star's "enormous talent and limitless potential".
