South Korea, US to suspend military drills

South Korea, US to suspend military drills

Meanwhile, South Korea Foreign Ministry spokesman Noh Kyu-duk said Tuesday that South Korea welcomed Kim's visit to China and said "the governments of South Korea and China shared the same strategic goal of completely denuclearizing the Korean peninsula".

China's foreign ministry refused to provide details on Kim's visit other than to say that Beijing hopes it will help deepen relations between the countries.

China wanted to make sure that it had a better sense of North Korea's interests and objectives.

While Mr. Pompeo has told reporters he does "not know exactly what the timing will be for our next conversation with North Korea", he has suggested there may be an announcement in the coming days.

Donald Trump gives the North Korea leader Kim Jong-un a thumbs up at their historic meeting on Sentosa Island.

Trump then claimed that suspending the drills would save the U.S. "a tremendous amount of money, before calling them 'provocative".

During a joint press conference with Pompeo, Wang said China would like the USA and North Korea to see the summit as "a new starting point" from which they can "maintain a momentum of dialogue and consultation, accommodate each other's legitimate concerns, and work with other parties to advance the process of denuclearisation and the political settlement of the peninsula issue".

Chinese state media confirmed Kim's scheduled trip in a short notice published on Tuesday morning.

"This is an improvement".

But Kim called for the suspension of military drills that cast North Korea as the enemy at his meeting with Trump, North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported.

"No matter the changes in the global and regional situation, China's party and government's resolute position on being dedicated to consolidating and developing Sino-North Korea relations will not change", the report cited Xi as saying.

Last week, it emerged that Chinese authorities were blocking internet searches for all words and articles deemed overly critical of Kim, including the popular Chinese expression "Jin San Pang", translating as 'Fatty the Third'.

"I shouldn't be surprised", said one government official.

The visit comes as a dispute over the large trade imbalance between China and the USA has been escalating, straining ties between the world's two largest economies and moving them closer to a potential trade war. However, Trump just imposed 25% tariffs on $50 billion in Chinese goods and is proposing 10% tariffs on $200 billion more. -South Korea alliance modifying or cancelling their military exercises.

North Korea has always reacted to the Ulchi exercises with belligerence and often its own demonstrations of military capability.

A Nobel Peace Prize for President Trump?

In pledging to halt what Trump called the "wargames" during the Singapore Summit - even calling them "provocative" - the president appeared to have inadvertently given what Beijing had sought for a long time. "There will be a big question mark over whether China and the USA will continue this cooperation".
