France advances at World Cup, Peru eliminated after two games

Kylian Mbappe's first World Cup goal was enough to send France into the knockout stages and send Peru crashing out of the tournament after just two matches.

Mbappe's goal, which came from close-range after Olivier Giroud's shot took a wicked deflection to beat goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, saw the 19-year-old become the youngest player to score for France at a major global tournament.

The result leaves France on six points and Denmark and Australia on four and one respectively after their 1-1 draw earlier in the day.

The pair will replace Ousmane Dembele and Corentin Tolisso, who started against the Aussies but were poor and have now been dropped to the bench.

As they did in losing narrowly to Denmark, Peru had plenty of chances, returning captain Paolo Guerrero firing at Hugo Lloris and Pedro Aquino clipping the post with a super strike from range.

"I think that we can beat any team - we have the tools to win".

World Cup Daily: Poland and Colombia fail to impress, while it just keeps getting better for hosts Russian Federation . With Neymar, the Selecao have enough creativity in the attacking third to drop Philippe Coutinho into a midfield role.

After a 36-year wait to return to the World Cup, Peru's Russian adventure will come to an end with their final group game against Australia next week.

Guerrero had one of Peru's best chances in the 87th minute from a free kick, but his attempt went right at Lloris.

Underdogs Peru are capable of beating anyone at the World Cup and will not allow France to bully them in their Group C clash, coach Ricardo Gareca said yesterday.

Once again, France struggled to find their rhythm, with the trio of Giroud, Antoine Griezmann and Mbappe playing brilliantly together but too often in isolation of the rest of the side.

Deschamps got a boost from Giroud and Matuidi in the match against Australia and wisely made the move to start them against Peru. But against the other top contenders, Les Bleus will have to play like a team.
