Facebook gives admins more power over the groups they control on WhatsApp

Since 2017, the app has added live location sharing, the ability to export user data to follow GDPR requirements, and an option to switch from voice calls to video calls.

This feature can be enabled by going to Group Info Group Settings Send Messages and choosing the "Only Admins" option.

The rollout assumes significance in India given that many WhatsApp groups have been linked to the spread of rumours and unverified information that has also led to violence.

WhatsApp is available as a free download on the App Store.

Another new feature that is being rolled out is group description which is essentially a short blurb found under group information that allows users to set the objective, guidelines or topics for the group. Messages will still appear for normal participants, but they will not be allowed to send any themselves unless they are upgraded to admin status. This feature is being remotely activated for WhatsApp beta version 2.18.201 users, although the site mentions that the roll-out is slow for Android, while it is comparatively faster for iOS and Windows Mobile.

Group Settings also has the Edit Group Info option that allows admins to controls whether all participants can edit the group's description or not. So, WhatsApp for iOS is getting another update that adds a couple of new features and improvements aimed at group admins. - You can now easily notify people when you change your phone number.
