Cup loses sheen with Messi, Ronaldo exit

With Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo having possibly played their final FIFA World Cups, the superstar duo are two of several big names who could retire from global football after their exits from the 2018 tournament in Russian Federation.

Real Madrid's Christiano Ronaldo.

Suarez's strike partner Edinson Cavani was Uruguay's main man in their 2-1 win over Portugal in the last 16.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure during the entire match and could not add to his four goals in the first two matches, failing to improve his record of failing to score in all six World Cup knockout matches he has played.

While Ronaldo will be bitterly disappointed to be heading home earlier than planned from Russian Federation, he at least has the consolation of having won his country's first ever European Championship, two years ago in France. The same can not be said for Messi and Ronaldo who, for all their iconic moments and unbeatable club records, have never scored a World Cup knockout goal.

May the best team win!

It was the first goal conceded by Uruguay at the World Cup 2018. He also scored the fastest goal at the tournament so far, struck its first hattrick, and, just for good measure, has now scored more goals in national team football than any other player. "That's why Uruguay has to be congratulated".

NBA Free Agent Rumors: Julius Randle Agrees To Contract With Pelicans
On Monday, Randle agreed to a two-year, $18 million deal with the New Orleans Pelicans , according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski . The Los Angeles Lakers have been the most active team in the National Basketball Association over the last day.

That the two legends who have won the world player of the year award five times each in the last 10 years could not rise to the occasion in the World Cup certainly dents their claims to sit alongside Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane in the pantheon of football immortals.

Portugal will take part in the inaugural Uefa Nations League later this year, beginning against Italy in September. He can help the younger players with his knowledge.

"It's the team that has to play, if Ronaldo plays alone we're going to lose".

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani have combined to give Uruguay at 1-0 lead at halftime against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the round of 16 game at the World Cup.

For the tournament in Russia, Santos brought 13 players from the Euro 2016 squad, including nine of the players who started in the final against France.

Uruguay had to withstand fierce late Portugal pressure as the European champions chased an equaliser.

With or without Ronaldo, Portugal will return to the field on September 10, when it will make its Nations League against Italy.
