James won a National Basketball Association title with Cleveland in 2016, but had generated buzz he would leave OH after losing consecutive finals' series to the Golden State Warriors in the last two seasons.

The arrival of LeBron James, however, means that Ball is no longer the face of the franchise and the Lakers no longer need to coddle him.

After taking some instant action on the Lakers, the Westgate moved their odds to 7-2, which is tied with the Boston Celtics for the second choice behind the Golden State Warriors, the minus-110 favorite to repeat as champs.

The Lakers' next steps are unclear, and though James may be patient about building a contender, he's 33 years old.

The scenario I've outlined where the Lakers sign nothing but one-year deals this summer would leave L.A. with something like $25 million in cap space in 2019 with Deng on the books.

Another reason for James's willingness to sign a long-term deal with the Lakers is the team's proximity to Hollywood.

Two of those cities obviously feature a ton of Lakers fans, while NY is probably one of the top markets for every top jersey in the National Basketball Association.
