Tekirdag governor Mehmet Ceyhan said the area where the derailment happened was muddy and hard to reach.

The train, carrying 362 passengers and six train staff, was traveling from Edirne province to Istanbul when five of its carriages came off the tracks near Sarilar village, leaving ten dead and 73 injured, Turkish media reported.

Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communications Ahmet Arslan said during the same meeting that routine controls on train rails, which have to be done once a year, had been made on April.

Turkey's audiovisual authority RTUK later said the government has issued a temporary ban on broadcasting images from the scene. "Many of those injured have been taken off the site", governor Mehmet Ceylan said. "The accident happened because of adverse weather conditions", he added.

"A suburban train had an accident. due to a landfall".

Reports said the surrounding area was muddy due to recent rains and the ground beneath the rails may have subsided away, causing the train to derail.

Russian news reports said that Russian tourists were on the train when it derailed.
