New York Giants and Washington Redskins pick cornerbacks in National Football League supplemental draft

Players become eligible for the supplemental draft for a variety of reasons, but this year's group of guys all seem to be legitimate prospects with solid National Football League upside, possibly even some early starting upside.

Beal played well as a junior in 2017, earning All-MAC second-team honors and picked off eventual Jets first-round QB Sam Darnold - whom the Giants passed on - among Beal's two INTs.

Chances are, that streak will continue, even though this year's Supplemental Draft does have some players that are deemed potentially worthy of selection. Only one other pick was made Wednesday: The New York Giants added Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal in the third round.

The draft order is determined through a lottery system that allows teams with worse win-loss records a better chance at a higher pick.

Once the draft order is set with all three groups, each team makes their bid (s) to Roger Goodell with each player they are interested in and what round they want that player.

The Giants will forfeit their corresponding third-rounder in 2019 following this selection. It was in 1987 when they selected the only Hall of Fame player ever to be chosen in the Supplemental Draft in wide receiver Cris Carter.

At least two national experts don't expect the Lions to participate in the draft.

Wimbledon: Roger Federer shocked in 5 sets by Kevin Anderson
Nadal will advance to play in his sixth Wimbledon semifinal, and his first since losing in the finals in 2011. Six times Anderson was required to hold serve to stay alive and each time he was equal to the task.

Beal becomes the first player taken in the supplemental draft since the Rams took offensive tackle Isaiah Battle in the fifth round in 2015. If Beal goes to the right team, he could start this year. But while the athleticism is there, Bryant plays out of scheme way too often and remains raw.

Beal was widely expected to be the first player off the board.

Browns fans are more familiar with this process than most teams.

Alexander is the third Virginia Tech player the Redskins have drafted this offseason.

What is the NFL Supplemental Draft?

- Scouting report: A touted high school recruit with both safety and cornerback potential, Alexander started his career on special teams and at safety for the Hokies, garnering Freshman All-American accolades.

Unless there's a significant injury, someone isn't going to make the team and it very well could be one of the players the Browns just signed in free agency. Still, without much time to prepare for his pro day, Beal stood out with good jumping numbers and a solid 40-yard dash (4.47 seconds). Beal is tall and he can run, which is shown on tape, but confirmed at pro day. Add in the fact the coaching staff is anything but certain beyond 2018 and using a 2019 draft asset on a player for 2018, which may then not fit a new coaching staff doesn't seem prudent.
