Emmy Award nominations: 'Handmaid's Tale' earns 20 nods

ABC's Black-ish has managed to increase its Emmy nomination tally a little bit every year of its existence.

"TBS bravely put a woman over 45 on TV and in turn I only got yelled at by the president once", she said in a statement. It secured 108 nominations this time.

FX's true crime drama The Assassination of Gianni Versace led the limited series category with 18 nominations, including Best Limited Series, Best Actor (Darren Criss), Best Supporting Actor for Ricky Martin, Edgar Ramirez and Finn Wittrock, and Best Supporting Actress for Penelope Cruz and Judith Light. The series wrapped up previous year, which makes this the final opportunity for Maslany to nab the Emmy for Orphan Black.

The Handmaid's Tale enters the 2018 Emmys as defending victor of the Outstanding Drama Series award - snapping Game of Thrones' two-year winning streak. The last time there were three freshman series in the top comedy category was 2010 (Modern Family, Glee and Nurse Jackie).

The nominees for best drama series were The Handmaid's Tale; Game of Thrones; This Is Us; The Crown; The Americans; Stranger Things; and Westworld.

Addiechi added that it was not a "proactive campaign" but said "we'll take action against things that are wrong". He estimated up to 10 times more unreported cases where Russian women were targeted.

The news was not so good for Nicole Kidman at Thursday's Emmy nomination ceremony in Los Angeles. The Rock's Ballers on HBO was nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series.

"Game of Thrones" will compete for best drama with last year's Emmy champion, Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale", which also won nods for actresses Elisabeth Moss, Alexis Bledel, Samira Wiley, Ann Dowd and Yvonne Strahovski.

"Game of Thrones" was out of the running in 2017 because the show aired later than usual.

Ozark's Jason Bateman received a nomination for best actor and director in a drama series, and Black Mirror's "USS Callister" was nominated for Best Television Movie.
