Other accounts that lost a sizable chunk of their followings to the bot-wipe were former ESPN reporter and Fox News contributor Britt McHenry, who saw her following shrink from 362,800 to 223,000, and National Basketball Association legend Shaquille O'Neal, who reportedly lost 1 million followers.

"This week, we'll be removing these locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally", said Twitter. By late Thursday night, the president had officially lost close to 196,000 followers as the purge kept on going.

Social Blade, a social media platform user statistics website, is tracking the slide in real time.

The majority of Twitter users will see a reduction of four followers or fewer, but those with larger follower counts will see a bigger drop, the company said.

Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Barack Obama each lost more than two million followers overnight. This is part of a broader effort to fight trolls, fake news, and disinformation on the platform. Major celebs, politicians and social media influencers are at the receiving end of Twitter's major crackdown on fake and bot accounts.

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", she wrote.

Backlash over Forbes dubbing Kylie Jenner 'self-made'
On Wednesday, People published a story claiming that was "shading" Forbes for its cover story, causing yet another disagreement on the correct use of a word.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav saw a drop of over 2,200 in his number of followers on the microblogging site.

For the average Twitter user, it is expected to be only a handful of accounts.

The microblogging site explained that it has been locking accounts when it detected sudden changes in account behaviour.

The accounts would have originally been blocked for tweeting large volumes of unsolicited replies or mentions, sharing links dubbed "misleading", or were being blocked by a large number of accounts after mentioning them.

Twitter's decision to delete locked accounts this week has cost India's political leaders lakhs of followers, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's handle seeing a decrease of over 2 lakh followers as on Friday evening.

Twitter said owners of accounts will not be able to log in unless they validate the accounts and reset passwords.
