Perisic went extremely close to giving Croatia the lead a few minutes later but his curling shot struck the bottom of the far post and was cleared by England, who were now hanging on. "We knew what they were doing and where", he said.

'It's time to hold our heads high as a nation and be proud of each other. This is an awesome achievement for us - it's a dream come true after such a long time.

"We were good. We controlled the game, but there's always tension with us, we always concede this early goal and have shocks", Vrsaljko said.
