Trump blasts May over Brexit during United Kingdom visit, casting pall over ties

Pro-EU lawmakers, in contrast, think the proposed post-Brexit ties with the bloc are not close enough.

During a press conference in Brussels after the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, Mr. Trump appeared to criticize Ms.

Trump also lamented in the interview that May had ignored his advice on how to proceed with Brexit, for which the British voted in 2016. Mr. Trump has been a keen supporter of Brexit and on Thursday he appeared to echo those concerns.

The US leader said at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels that it seemed as if the United Kingdom was "getting at least partially involved back with the European Union". "I think he's got what it takes", he added.

Referring to the Brexit blueprint, which was outlined by the government on Thursday, he said: "The deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on".

"Mr President, Sir Winston Churchill once said that, "To have the United States at our side was, to me, the greatest joy", Ms May told Mr Trump, according to a text of her speech provided by her office.

Ms. May quickly moved to fix the damage.

"I would say Brexit is Brexit", he told reporters.

Excerpts from Trump's bombshell interview were published Thursday just as the president was scheduled to dine with May at the palace.

Mr Trump's intervention comes at the end of a tumultuous few days for Ms May.

Addressing the 100-strong group, the prime minister said there was an "unprecedented" opportunity to do a deal that boosted jobs and growth in both countries.

At its heart is a proposal for a new U.K. -EU "free trade area", with interlinked customs regimes, and identical regulations for industrial goods and agri-food. It also requires all members to charge the same tariffs on imports from countries outside the bloc.

On Thursday morning, an unofficial alternative White Paper purportedly drafted by Davis and his Exiting the European Union department set out its own proposal for trade relations based on a "Canada-style" free trade pact.

At the moment, it appears very much like former foreign secretary Boris Johnson and former Brexit secretary David Davis resigned over a proposal that won't ever actually materialise.

The UK is set to leave the European Union on 29th March 2019, more than two years after the referendum that saw 51.9% vote to leave compared to 48.1% who wanted to stay.

But services including financial services such as accounting and insurance account for three-quarters of the British economy. "This does not respect the referendum result".

Officials told The Telegraph that any European Union efforts to impose market surveillance on British territory would be a red line in the Brexit negotiations, which resume next week. The plans laid out in a 98-page government paper give Britain's most detailed answer yet to the question of what will replace it.
