Chicago man ran away, reached to waist

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days. The department said officers on foot patrol Saturday evening "approached a male subject exhibiting characteristics of an armed person". As Augustus breaks away and runs into the street, he appears to be struggling to withdraw something from his waistband.

"From police perspective, you know, these things happen in a split second", Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said during a press conference Sunday.

"The footage pauses and zooms in on the weapon". He spins and darts between the SUV and the police cruiser as he reaches towards his waist.

Augustus had a 5-year-old daughter who often accompanied him to work, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said.

"I mean, it is what it is", Supt Johnson said. Johnson told reporters on Sunday.

Medical examiners said Mr Augustus died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police planned to release footage from officers' body-worn cameras later on Sunday.

On Saturday, Chicago gun violence left two people dead, including a 16-year-old boy, on Saturday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Citizens of the city do not believe the man was armed and have taken to the streets to hold police to account and to mourn the man's death.

Buried in the press release was a reference to a new keyboard, "an improved third-generation keyboard for quieter typing". In fact, Apple has a patent for this exact tech created to "prevent and/or alleviate contaminant ingress".

The video, which lacks sound, shows four officers approaching Augustus outside a store on the city's South Side.

The decision to make video public less than 24 hours after the incident was a notable departure from police department policy of officer-involved shootings.

The video shows several officers surrounding Augustus and asking him questions.

Guglielmi says a weapon was recovered at the scene but did not say where or whether it was on the man.

The newly released bodycam footage shows Augustus appearing to reach behind him as officers attempt to grab him from behind.

In the Grand Crossing neighborhood of the predominantly black South Side, protesters clashed with officers carrying batons, leading to four arrests, the AP reported. The statement also said there will be a use of force investigation. Police accounts differ slightly by the media report, but officers say they encountered the man on foot, confronted him, and when he became combative and reached for a weapon in his trousers they opened fire, per CNN. Police rep Anthony Guglielmi says the victim was shot several times, but blames "inaccurate information" for fomenting the crowd. This is the latest event to expose the mistrust between police and local residents in black communities in Chicago.

He had no recent arrest history, Mr Guglielmi said, without elaborating.

A third officer was shot while searching for the suspect, who barricaded himself inside a home less than a mile from the motel.
