Amazon Prime Day fizzles yet retailer expects membership growth

Megan Quinn, general partner at Spark Capital, tweeted that Amazon's cloud competitors at Google should be delighted: "Diane Greene is the only person celebrating Amazon Prime Day so far", referring to Google's cloud chief. It's rather impressive to see Amazon maintain stock on such a wide variety of items for almost the entire duration of the huge shopping event.

While Amazon would probably argue its 404 error pages are simply an extension of the company's dog-friendly culture, let's face it: they're also a creative way to cushion the blow whenever parts of its heavily trafficked website goes down.

The worldwide bestsellers were the Fire TV Stick and the Echo Dot, coincidentally some of the lower priced Amazon devices at $19.99 and $29.99 respectively.

As the name suggests, the sales from this event were only available to, and Amazon had more signups for the membership service than on any other day in history.

Prime customers are hugely important to Amazon, as they are known as the site's most frequent and valuable customers.

Amazon's website ran into some snags quickly Monday on its much-hyped Prime Day, an embarrassment for the tech company on the shopping holiday it created.

It's a sharp contrast from the first Prime Day in 2015, when customers kvetched on social media about underwhelming offerings that resembled a warehouse clearance sale.

Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This year the 36-hour event began at 3 p.m. on Monday, and it continues through the end of Tuesday, July 17.
