U.S. President Donald Trump, left and Russian President Vladimir Putin shake hands during their meeting in the Presidential Palace in Helsinki.

Shortly ahead of the breakfast meeting, Trump had tweeted saying that his country's relationship with Russia "has never been worse", due to allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!" wrote Trump.

"That's all." Ahead of the Helsinki summit, European officials say they fear Trump more than Russian President Vladimir Putin. Now our relationship with Russian Federation has "NEVER been worse", says the man who was alive throughout the Cold War.

"I think we will end up having an extraordinary relationship", Trump said, sitting beside Putin inside the Finnish presidential palace.

Trump also took time out to congratulated Putin on hosting a successful World Cup tournament.

Wearing a blue suit, white shirt and red tie, the USA president congratulated Putin on Russia's hosting of the World Cup, "one of the best ever, from what everybody tells me", adding that he had watched the semi-finals and final and it was "beautifully done". "We spent a great deal of time talking about it. Putin feels strongly about the issue and has an interesting idea", he told reporters after one-on-one talks.

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the 7-year-old girl's funeral. "She died trying to help her father". A 7-year-old was killed early Sunday after she was struck by a vehicle while attempting to text 911 for help for her father.

The US President said they would talk about a range of subjects, listing trade, the military, nuclear weapons and China.

Trump also said he's confident Washington and Moscow can improve relations and said a friendly and productive relationship is "a good thing".

"If I was given the great city of Moscow as retribution for all of the sins and evils committed by Russian Federation..."

There have been calls in the U.S. for Mr Trump to cancel the meeting following the indictments of Russian military intelligence agents, which were announced on Friday.

Adding to the pressure on Trump is a new Justice Department indictment issued Friday accusing 12 Russian military intelligence officials of extensive hacking in 2016 that was specifically aimed at discrediting Clinton.

'Question for President Trump as he meets Putin: Do you know which team you play for?' "There is no clear agenda". He claimed Mr Obama "was informed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation about Russian Meddling, he said it couldn't happen, was no big deal, & did NOTHING about it". Their first meeting came last July when both took part in an global summit and continued for more than two hours, well over the scheduled 30 minutes.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said, "this answer by President Trump will be seen by Russian Federation as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves".
