The push for a hearing reflects a growing Republican backlash against Trump after his closed-door meeting with Putin and a stormy press conference where he sided with the Russian leader and discounted the USA intelligence community's findings on Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Why did Trump take Putin's side?

And the scripted cleanup pertained only to the least defensible of his comments.

On Tuesday, however, Trump backtracked and claimed that he had misspoken - that he had, in fact, meant to say that he did believe that Russian Federation had interfered in the election.

But muddling his message, Trump added that it "could be other people also". I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be'. "You know the president can do more damage in 15 minutes at a press conference than we can undo in six months of passing resolutions".

"President Trump hasn't been that masterful handling global issues either, but in his way, he's trying to do something about the number of things, whether he's successful, I hope he's successful and I think all Americans will support him if he's successful", Tchantouridze said.

With no ifs or buts, the Republican leader declared: "The European countries are our friends, and the Russians are not". But I think we will end up having an extraordinary relationship.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again: The reviews are in
Here We Go Again , which debuts in NZ cinemas on July 19. "It was amusing , it was moving so we said go ahead and here we are". The band said: "We all felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio".

President Donald Trump read from a typed script on Tuesday afternoon to claim he misspoke in his press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump's clarification on Tuesday is probably one of the oddest things to ever emerge from a presidency that has been chock full of absurdities, not least because it was that rare occasion in which the former reality TV star admitted that he had gotten something wrong.

Talk radio hosts Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh also defended the president, arguing that it was President Barack Obama on whose watch Putin's mischief occurred but Trump who was being held to account for it. "That will go to my son Barron, we have no question in fact, Melania, here you go", the president said, before bouncing the ball to his wife and US First Lady sat in the front row.

Standing side-by-side on stage with the man accused of complicity in an attack on the very bedrock of American democracy, Trump said his intelligence people "think it's Russian Federation".

Both parties called for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other officials to appear before Congress and tell exactly what happened during Mr Trump's two-hour private session with Mr Putin.

Speaking to the press after a private meeting, Trump ripped special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into his campaign's possible election collusion with Russian Federation. "We all saw it", the mayor said.

He rallied European populists in London ahead of the president's visit to the United Kingdom last week and emerged on Tuesday to defend Trump's press conference performance.
