Judge denies Manafort bid to suppress evidence seized in condo raid

Special counsel Robert Mueller filed court documents Tuesday requesting immunity for five potential witnesses in the case against President Donald Trump's former campaign chair Paul Manafort.

On Tuesday, Mueller's office asked the judge in the Virginia trial to compel five potential witnesses to testify under a condition of immunity.

Prosecutors did not name the potential witnesses, who have not been charged, because they have not been publicly identified as being involved in the case.

Manafort faces numerous charges, including conspiracy to commit money laundering, making false statements and working as an unregistered agent of the government of Ukraine. "The motions would reveal those individuals' involvement in the investigation and the trial, thereby creating the risk of their undue harassment".

Immunity would relieve them of the need of Fifth Amendment protections, so the witnesses could then be forced to testify.

Manafort's lawyers had sought to limit the scope of evidence that prosecutors can rely on for his upcoming September trial in Washington, D.C., claiming that the search warrant was overly broad and unconstitutional.

The indictment says Manafort and business associate Rick Gates passed money they received from Ukraine through foreign bank accounts to hide it from the Internal Revenue Service.

Commenting on the request, Judge Ellis said: "Nationwide press coverage of defendant's trial will persist from now until the end of trial and perhaps beyond".

Manafort, 69, is accused of bank fraud and tax crimes in the Alexandria case.

He said: "It would be inappropriate for courts to move trials around the country in cases of this sort until a district could be found where a defendant's political views were shared by at least as many persons in the district as those with contrary views".
