Two of those passengers are in stable condition, but the third, a woman in her 20s, was listed in serious condition with a fractured femur.

Previously, experienced operators such as Shane Turpin, captain of the boat hit in Monday's explosion, had to stay only 50 meters (164 feet) away. "It just exploded straight out at the boat and you could hear the rocks hit the boat and the people yelling", said Glenda Fay, an eyewitness in the boat behind the one which was stuck.

He and his tour group had been in the area for about 20 minutes making passes of the ocean entry about 500 yards offshore, Turpin said.

"How high and how far really depends on the vigor of the steam explosion, and that depends on the amount of lava going into the ocean", Babb said.

The "lava bomb" was a result of the Kilauea volcano, which has been erupting on the island since the beginning of March.

The continuous eruption of the volcano produced lava, which was pushed by underwater pressure to flow to the surface, the USGS said.

More recently, lava from this eruption led to the formation of a small island, the U.S. Geological Survey reported July 13.

Monday's large blast may have been amplified by the relatively shallow water at the point where the lava entered the sea. In the 2016-2017 flow to the south, there was only about 4 cubic meters per second being erupted.

Asked if the company had seen cancellations, she said "not really".

"If we stop operating, it not only hurts us, it hurts the community", Jones said. A collapse explosion event, which is measured in quake magnitude, caused an increase of activity from fissure 8 resulting in some channel overflows, USGS said.

Another tour boat, operated by Hawaiian Lava Boat Tours, was off-shore when the explosion occurred. The lava flow has destroyed hundreds of homes, but until now the only serious injury was a man whose leg was broken by flying lava.
