Iran files suit in int'l court against United States over sanctions

The lawsuit argues that the recent U-S decision to impose sanctions after pulling out of the 20-15 nuclear deal violates the 19-55 Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations and Consular Rights between Tehran and Washington.

Mnuchin was talking to reporters en route from Mexico where he was part of a high-level USA delegation led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to meet Mexico´s next president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Iran filed a lawsuit against the US on Tuesday, alleging that the Trump administration's decision to hit the country with new sanctions after withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal was in violation of a decades-old treaty.

Trump withdrew the USA from the nuclear agreement in May, saying that old approvals would be set up back and that the U.S "will be instituting the highest level of economic sanction".

Indications are growing that Chinese companies are scrapping plans to purchase oil from the United States and are instead turning to Iran for imports in what appears to be a result of escalating trade tariff war between Beijing and Washington.

Following that withdrawal, the USA announced it would re-impose sanctions targeting critical sectors of Iran's economy, such as its energy, petrochemical, and financial sectors.

Trump urged Saudi Arabia, the biggest producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and a key USA ally in the Middle East, to raise its production to offset a possible decline by Iran.

"That might include pressure to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which the administration indicated they were considering on Friday", said Lipow.

They said India is looking at the possibility of falling back on the rupee-rial arrangement for importing oil from Iran in the wake of U.S. sanctions. On Chabahar, India had managed to insulate port development from sanctions through a special waiver, he said.

Former Indian ambassador to the US Arun Singh was of the view that the current situation-in a broad manner-was similar to what was prevailing between 2012-15 before the Iran nuclear deal was negotiated.

"If the forecast holds, that would make the U.S. the world's leading producer of crude", Linda Capuano, who heads the U.S. Energy Information Administration, said, according to the Associated Press. "That's something that Treasury and State will be doing", he said.

Meanwhile, IRGC-linked Tasnim news agency carried the WSJ report on its website on July 17, adding that "US officials have repeatedly said that European companies and people could be targeted if they continue doing business in Iran once USA sanctions fully snap back in November".

French finance minister Bruno Le Maire said at the weekend that Washington had rejected a French request for waivers for its companies operating in Iran.

Paris had singled out key areas where it expected exemptions or extended wind-down periods for French companies, including energy and banking.

The US has told India and other countries to cut oil imports from the Gulf nation to "zero" by 4 November or face sanctions.

"New Delhi has been apprised of the United States thinking on the sanctions on Iran". He did not name the country he had not yet consulted. "I'm very confident they understand".

Iran filed a complaint against U.S. in the worldwide court of justice for the re-imposition of unilateral sanctions, the report said the Ministry of foreign Affairs on Tuesday, July 17, reports The Times of Israel. Iran's filing asks the ICJ to order the United States to provisionally lift its sanctions ahead of more detailed arguments.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday wrote a tweet post on the issue.
