Nine Family Members Killed When Branson Boat Capsized

Nine Family Members Killed When Branson Boat Capsized

Michelle Chaffer, the Brights' eldest daughter, said her mom and dad were grandparents to 16 kids, 10 of whom belong to Chaffer.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent a team to investigate.

"The winds were behind what is called a ‘gust front", reported weather blogger meteorologist Mike Smith.

"Our hearts are heavy tonight", the City of Branson said in a statement. There had been wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour reported at Branson Airport at the time of the tragic accident.

Mongeluzzi said there have been as many as 40 deaths involving duck boats since 1999.

Strong waves capsized the boat during a severe storm. One of those boats eventually sank.

The footage shows the vessel bobbing through the waves as the haul boat begins to become submerged in the swollen lake. One returned safely. The other did not. In Philadelphia the same year, a woman was killed when she was hit by a duck boat crossing a street. "Somebody needs to help them". Both were desperately trying to make it back to shore. The boat went down about 40 minutes later, shortly after 7pm local time. A severe thunderstorm warning had been issued for Branson at 6:32 p.m. Thursday.

"Will be a duck that has capsized".

But Andrew Duffy, another attorney who was involved in the 2010 Philadelphia case, says he's seen little progress toward enacting those safety recommendations. "Its pretty intense here", another voice said later.

An off-duty deputy working security helped rescue people, Rader said, without providing details. Investigators said earlier Friday that 13 people had been killed while four were still missing.

"Some people are already on land", another caller said later. "Our prayers are with the victims and their loved ones. And here were are a day later you and me talking and they're no longer with us". Multiple people are still missing.

Trump's Fed criticism prompts fears he's questioning bank's independence
The Fed has raised interest rates twice in 2018, and is expected to issue at least two more rate hikes before the end of the year. He also called Jerome Powell , whom Trump nominated to lead the Fed, a "very good man".

Rader told reporters he believed the boat - which he said was one of two duck boats still operating during the storm - sank due to the weather.

In a short video taken by Malaske from the deck of the Belle, the duck boat can be seen wallowing through the choppy, wind-whipped lake, with water only inches from its windows.

Allison Lester, who was on a nearby boat, told "Good Morning America" Friday that the waters "were rough".

"This is a very tough night for us".

Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Laurie Driver says storms tend to blow up quickly in the region of southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas that includes Table Rock, but the agency must rely on people making their own judgments about the safety of setting out on the water. The city set up a command post inside, offering chaplains, psychologists and Red Cross services to families, Pettit said.

Video captured from another vessel shows the Ride the Ducks amphibious boat pushing through white caps and high winds on Table Rock Lake in Branson on Thursday. The Branson operation was purchased previous year by Ripley Entertainment, a company spokesperson Suzanne Smagala-Potts told the Washington Post.

The company that builds ducks, Ride the Ducks International LLC, agreed in 2016 to pay a $1 million fine after one of the vehicles, which operate on land as well as water, collided with a bus in Seattle, killing five international students.

Twenty-nine passengers and two crew members were aboard for a pleasure cruise.

Jim Pettison Jr., the president of parent company Ripley Entertainment, said nothing like this has ever happened in the business's 47-year history. "This incident has deeply affected all of us".

Divers had arrived at the scene to assist in the search, Rader said, ending the rescue efforts for the night at 11:00 pm (0400 GMT Friday), with plans to resume operations in the morning.

The boat's captain was among 14 survivors, five of whom were injured.
