Deputies seek armed teen who held up boy’s lemonade stand

Deputies believe the suspect left a bicycle in the brush for his getaway.

The child and his stand are a fixture in the neighborhood.

Police in North Carolina are searching for a suspect accused of robbing a 9-year-old boy's lemonade stand at gunpoint.

Almost every weekend the boy has been setting up his lemonade stand along a round-a-bout in the neighborhood so he could buy a new lawnmower for his other weekend business.

The boy's father, Philip Smith, said the thief got away with only $17. The 9-year-old lemonade vendor said a teenager wearing a similar hat and a black shirt pointed a black handgun at him and took his cash box Saturday afternoon in Monroe, about 30 miles (50 kilometres) southeast of Charlotte. "Criminals are very bold".

Neighbor Kelly Smith says the boy opened his stand at the neighborhood pool Sunday.

"Never had an incident like this, never thought this would happen", commented Smith.

Deputies found the camo hat and a BB handgun stashed in a wood near the residential tract and are asking the public's help in tracking down the suspect.

The Union County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to the entrance of St. John's Forest around 3 p.m. So far, there aren't any leads on a suspect.

Those with information that might assist detectives in this matter should contact the Union County Sheriff's Office or Union County Crimestoppers.
