Inter Milan strike personal terms with Real Madrid midfielder Modric

Spanish newspaper Marca report Kovacic refused to return to training on Monday as requested, and notified Real he will not return until his future is resolved.

Inter Milan made contact with Modric's agents over a possible move, according to Sky in Italy, but Real president Florentino Perez says anyone wishing to sign the midfielder must pay his £668m buy-out clause.

"We will see him when we get back [to Spain] on August 8 and we'll see if he is available on the 15th in our first key match".

The deal, which is not yet finalised, is said to please all three parties as the 24-year-old is guaranteed regular game time, Chelsea will have another option for their midfield and Real do not permanently lose out on a player they still rate highly.

"I think the president said it, I don't think there's much more to add", Lopetegui said. "Luka Modric is an extraordinary player and we're waiting for him with open arms".

"I told him he was a player I'm passionate about, I love him and he knows it".

Il Giornale are reporting that Florentina Perez is happy to let one of his star players leave the Bernabeu this summer in something of a shock story.

"I've not seen that he's gone on strike", Lopetegui said.

And Modric's Madrid team-mate Lucas Vazquez echoed his manager's comments, hoping that Modric will continue his six-year stay in the Spanish capital by staying for the 2018-19 campaign.

Modric has two years remaining on the contract extension he signed in October 2016.
