Allegheny County Health Department to treat for mosquitoes

Mosquitoes taken from a trap in the southeastern part of Mitchell have tested positive for West Nile virus, the Perth District Health Unit reports.

The county's Health Unit reports that mosquitoes taken from a trap in the southeastern part of Mitchell have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The Health Department wants to remind the public that the virus is present and has been around for many years.

Residents also should drain any standing water around their homes or businesses and limit activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

There was one human case of West Nile virus in Oxford County in 2017.

There is new evidence of West Nile virus in Perth County.

The mosquitos get the virus by feeding on infected birds.

Cover up with light-colored clothes, long sleeves and trousers when outdoors or while in areas where mosquito activity is high.

Use effective insect repellent such as DEET or Picaridin. Officials first began seeing a significant increase in early July and the trend has continued as the humid months wear on. Of the 26 Dallas County residents infected previous year, two died from the mosquito-borne illness.
