Canada shooting: Four dead in Fredericton as gunman on the run

Two Fredericton police officers are among the four people killed during Friday morning's shooting in New Brunswick.

Four people have died in a shooting in Canada.

According to Fredericton Police, they have one suspect in custody.

Fredericton is in New Brunswick province, about 50 miles east of the USA border with Maine.

They were also asking people on Facebook not to use social media to report on police locations.

The CBC reported that a Tim Horton's near the shooting is locked down, and police and first responders are in the area of the violence, described as a residential area.

Wait for updates from police, ' the Fredericton Fire Department said on Twitter. They had previously warned the public not to expose the whereabouts of police as they worked to address the situation.

David MacCoubrey said he awoke in his Brookside Drive apartment at 7:07 the sound of gunshots "10 metres from my bed".

Fredericton resident Robert DiDiodata said he heard a series of "firecracker" sounds around 7am (8pm AEST).

"It was sort of like a pop, pop, pop, pop".

Louise Kennedy, 75, who lives with her dog at 237 Brookside Drive, said the shooting began in the building next door at about 7 a.m. AT.

CNN network partner CTV said its reporter there said "police appeared to be focused on one particular residence" and that he heard four shots during a five-minute stretch.

Last month, a gunman walked down a busy Toronto street, killing two people and wounding 13 before turning his gun on himself.
