Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to humans and other animals when they bite. Once baited into the traps they are shipped to a lab in Quebec where they test for the virus.

Aerial spraying has also occurred over agricultural areas outside the city limits.

State officials said there have been higher rates of mosquitoes carrying the virus this year due to humid weather. The risk is greatest during dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active.

West Nile Virus was found to be present in mosquitoes collected for sampling last Thursday. Earlier this week, the Montana Department of Livestock confirmed the first reported cases of equine West Nile Virus in Montana of the year.

Health officials are advising people in Saskatoon and surrounding areas to take the necessary protective measures to lower their chance of being bitten by mosquitoes for the rest of the summer.

DHS will continue surveillance for West Nile virus until the end of the mosquito season.
