Trump calls for peace on Charlottesville anniversary as residents on edge

The organiser of last year's event, white nationalist Jason Kessler, was denied a permit in Charlottesville this year but has secured permission to hold a demonstration on Sunday in Washington, across the street from the White House. A local woman, Heather Heyer, was killed when an OH man, James Fields, drove his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters.

Fields was charged with 29 hate crimes.

Charlottesville, Virginia, was marking the anniversary of last summer's white supremacist violence with marches, vigils and other community events that began unfolding peacefully Saturday amid a heavy police presence. "It's so fraught with what's happened that I feel I need to be away this weekend", McKeithen says. According to Young, the rally will host a number of speakers from a variety of different backgrounds to "celebrate our our existence and our resilience ".

The security zone is in full effect in Charlottesville and only pedestrians are allowed access to the Downtown Mall and park containing the Lee statue. It said "there is no expectation of privacy" and told participants not to talk to the media.

"Some of our members are concerned about safety for their staff and guests and came to us with questions as we are a resource for the restaurant community".

Preparations have been in the works for Sunday's event for months between law local enforcement agencies, U.S. Park Police and the U.S. Secret Service. On Twitter, the DC Metropolitan Police Department tweeted that it was "prepared to protect the rights of individuals to exercise their First Amendment freedoms and also ensure public safety".

"Officers will be on high alert for anyone who will be carrying a firearm", he warned.

Sunday's protest comes as the alt-right - a loosely knit coalition of white nationalist, white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups - faces fractures and infighting.

After last year's protests, debates erupted on whether or not Confederate monuments should be removed. And the events likely will be dwarfed by counterprotests, for which permits also have been issued.

Several white supremacists are expected to speak at the second annual Unite the Right rally, including David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

She also claims without evidence that tapes exist of the president using the N-word repeatedly on the reality show's set. TMZ caught the former White House staffer as she arrived at a Washington, D.C. airport ahead of a publicity blitz.

One of those businesses, Chief Brian' Comfort Kitchen, is located just blocks from where the epicenter for the rally will be held and its owner said he will take a stand against those attending the Unite the Right rally.

He then condemned all types of racism and acts of violence.

Students and activists are rallying Saturday evening at the University of Virginia's campus in Charlottesville to mark the one-year anniversary of the Virginia White Nationalist Rally.

Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, told USA TODAY that Trump's comments on Saturday seemed to be forced and noted the wording was suspicious.

"I think there is blame on both sides", he said.

"We have people coming to our city for the sole goal of spewing hate", Bowser said at a news conference Thursday.

Now, the anniversary today of the Unite the Right rally and counterprotests on August 12, 2017, could test the president's leadership.
