Manchester City make Emery suffer in his Premier League debut

Stephan Lichtsteiner doesn't expect Arsenal boss Unai Emery to change his methods after defeat to Manchester City.

Another bonus for City was the performance of Benjamin Mendy, who made his first Premier League start since September following a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Arsenal's energetic pressing in the midfield area had City on the back foot in the second half, but lapses in concentration in defence proved the hosts are very much a work in progress.

England forward Raheem Sterling only came back on Monday but opened the scoring with a 14th-minute goal at the Emirates Stadium before Bernardo Silva wrapped up a 2-0 win with a second-half strike.

'I mean, even the Arsenal crowd cheered when [Cech] dropped one in the opposition's half. But the initial positioning of the two players was fascinating, suggesting that Guardiola believes Mendy has the ability to play inside, a la Fabian Delph or, for a more flattering comparison, David Alaba.

Whereas last season Guardiola used advanced wingers stretching the play and going in behind, often with more conservative full-backs, here his approach was different.

"We want competence with the goalkeepers and all the players in the squad", he said.

"I want to thank his mum and dad for giving him such a special body shape", Guardiola joked after the final whistle. "For the record I am not a manager".

He went on to play his next 5 holes in 2 under par, which leaves him at even par for the championship in a tie for 64th. Woods had his mojo back early in the round and was sitting pretty at three-under par before the delay.

It was a Pep Guardiola masterclass as his City team ran riot in the league winning games in style playing extravagant football.

Sterling has two years left to run on the five-year deal signed when he moved to City from Liverpool in July 2015. When you play against a team with such quality and the confidence of being champions from the last season it was always going to be hard.

With Arsenal keen to play out from the back, City exerted pressure high up the pitch.

"Hopefully we can convince him to forget a little bit the social media and improve a few things".

He has this experience for continuing to defend our goal. "Also, Leno is starting with us".

"We wanted to show our performance but it is clear against Manchester City we could not give them this win".

Raheem Sterling, who contributed 23 league goals in last season's title triumph that saw City become the first English top-flight team to reach 100 points in a season, left a host of Arsenal defenders trailing in his wake before angling a low shot past Petr Cech.
