Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon tops the NH list, followed by Catholic Medical Center in Manchester and Concord Hospital. All were put on the report's honor roll, which recognized 20 hospitals with "outstanding performance" across multiple areas. Princeton Health, which joined Penn Medicine in early 2018, was ranked #10 in New Jersey and #20 in the New York Metro Area.

Because the rankings focus on challenging medical conditions, U.S. News said, hospitals had to have a minimum level of patient volume in those specialties to be ranked.

These rankings are based on critical health elements, including patient survival and safety, hospital reputation, and care-related factors.

The big mover on the state list was U of C Medical Center, which rose in IL from eighth.

UC Davis was the only Sacramento-area hospital to be ranked among the top 50 US hospitals when it comes to complex specialty care.

US News & World Report's rankings are based on 16 specialty areas.
