"Our last thing was to tell the students and their parents that, hey, tuition is going to be on us", Dr. Rafael Rivera, associate dean for admission and financial aid, told ABC News in a telephone interview Thursday.

"We really believe that medical student debt is among the biggest issues our country faces in terms of providing excellent physicians to serve our health care needs", Grossman said.

The NYU School of Medicine said Thursday current and future medical students will be awarded full tuition scholarships regardless of need or merit, reports CBS2's Ali Bauman. The yearly tuition costs covered by the scholarship are $55,018.

With a lower debt burden, the school is hopeful more students will pursue lower-paying fields, such as primary care, pediatrics and OB/GYN.

NYU raised more than $450 million of the roughly $600 million it estimates it will need to fund the tuition package in perpetuity, including $100 million from Home Depot founder Kenneth Langone and his wife, Elaine.

"We thought it was a moral imperative because it's very hard for medical students to incur the debt burden of medical school, as well as the additional time burden of training", Grossman told ABC News on Thursday.

Shockingly, some of the effects were similar to those seen in regular smokers and people with chronic lung disease . It believed that e-cigarettes can help one overcome the habit of smoking and should be allowed on prescription.

All medical students at New York University will now be able to attend tuition-free - a major first for a highly ranked medical school as it aims to eliminate the burden of crippling student debt for its students.

Few medical schools have managed to cover tuition for a wide swath of students.

Medical school officials announced the scholarships today at NYU Langone Health's Tisch Hospital in Manhattan.

Most medical students will still need to pay about $29,000 for annual room and board and other living expenses.

For its most recent application cycle, the school received more than 6,000 applications for 102 spots, according to Grossman. The school also implemented in 2013 an accelerated 3-year M.D. program so students could start earning a salary one year earlier. They owed an average amount of $191,000, according to a survey by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The free-tuition initiative began more than a decade ago when NYU created an endowment for that objective.
