Whalen to retire from WNBA

And yet even with a packed gym in front her Monday, with dozens of media members and national TV cameras, Minnesota Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen does not yet know the breadth of her impact. "I will always cherish the times we spent together over the last eight years bringing championships to her home state of Minnesota". Since joining the Lynx, she's helped the team win 71.4 percent of its games, according to the release.

The four-time WNBA champion has built up quite the resume over 14 years in the league.

The gritty guard will finish her career as the Lynx leader in assists and fourth-leading scorer.

Whalen's legendary career garnered praise from other basketball greats, including Rebecca Lobo and LeBron James. In a statement she thanked the Lynx and her prior team, the Connecticut Sun, adding, "I look forward to the next chapter in my basketball career and wish my Lynx coaches and teammates all of the best in the future". She'll move on to focus on her duties as head coach of the women's basketball program at Minnesota, which announced her hiring in April. The 36-year-old Whalen is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who led the Gophers to their only Final Four in 2004. The Sun drafted her with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2004 draft and she started all but one of her 197 games with the team.
