Arsenal's Granit Xhaka adds to Newcastle woe

Arsenal's Granit Xhaka adds to Newcastle woe

Despite a slow start to the game, the Gunners fought back well and came out all guns blazing in the second half that saw them dominating proceedings throughout the rest of the game. Granit Xhaka scored from a long-range free kick and helped to set up Mesut Ozil for Arsenal's second before a late Ciaran Clark header ensured a nervous finish.

He simply responded with a slight grin on his face: "Oh, we were better than you today Al".

Ozil looked refreshed at St James' Park after being given time off during the recent worldwide break, playing a prominent role in a deserved success which saw Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka open the scoring for the Gunners.

Emery also praised Lucas Torreira for giving his team the "balance" it needed after coming on as a half-time substitute.

Once again, Gunners goalkeeper Petr Cech looked ill at ease with the ball at his feet in his new "sweeper-keeper" role, with questions very much remaining over the Arsenal skipper's ability to play out from the back.

Having found life hard for much of the first half, this contest had the look of one in which Arsenal would normally crumble. We didn't concede the transition as easy. Of course I was looking at what he was doing, even something as simple as just looking at his shooting technique.

The 55-year-old worked with Ozil during his time at Madrid and maintains a good relationship with the attacking midfielder. "I am very happy with Matteo and with Lucas", Emery said.

Arsenal grew into the game as the half progressed with Alexandre Lacazette firing into the side-netting, while Aaron Ramsey should have teed up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a tap-in rather than sending a cross high over the crossbar. "It was not a big problem, but he was [too] exhausted to continue".

"So I think he's just a world-class player".

Emery's side are now up to nine points in the league, level on points with north London rivals, Tottenham.

As Emery said after the game about the switch during the break.

"Normally I will use a different keeper for this competition, but I'm thinking about the best performance".
