Hamilton storms to pole in Singapore GP

Mercedes' British driver Lewis Hamilton attends a press conference ahead of the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore on September 13, 2018.

The race is like to be an one-stopper so what Vettel needs to do is be within two seconds of Hamilton when the pit window opens, which is expected to be around Lap 20 or slightly beyond.

Hamilton earned a maximum 25 points, making the German's job tougher with six races remaining as Vettel settled for 15.

Ricciardo has finished on the podium in the last four editions of the Singapore Grand Prix, including a hattrick of second places from 2015-17.

Instead he lost position and crucial points, dropping back behind Verstappen having earlier overtaken him. "It doesn't help [in the championship], but I am mostly thinking about today, and the way we raced we didn't stand a chance". "Lewis got the job done but we gave him a vehicle he could do that with". As we'd gone through the qualifying session again, the real challenge in Q1 on the ultra-soft, and then we obviously got into that last session and it was just about pulling all of the little bits you'd found through practice and trying to see if you could put it into a flawless puzzle. The second incident of race took place on lap 34 when a frustrated Perez collided with Sirotkin, pushing the Mexican to the back of the grid.

"I´m spent. It felt like the longest race of my life so I´m glad it´s over", said Hamilton when interviewed on track after hugging his crew in celebration.

He said: "We tried to be aggressive in the beginning, and it didn't work out".

E-cigarette sales to kids targeted
The FDA says e-cigarette manufacturers must show in the next two months how they will keep their products out of kids' hands. According to the FDA, more than 2 million middle and high school students past year said they used e-cigarettes.

They brought Vettel in on lap 14 and switched him on to the ultra-soft tyres, hoping to benefit from the rubber's extra pace on its initial laps.

"The only thing I can say is it was a great qualifying, I think the best I have ever done and also the auto was working really well".

Valtteri Bottas has been unlucky as well as overshadowed at Mercedes this year, but his sound defensive driving ten laps from the end held off the threats of the always-dangerous Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

Hamilton's stunning pole Saturday was a record-extending 79th.

Hamilton had said: "There's a lot left of the tyres".

Ferrari were favourites to win both the last two races at Monza for the Italian Grand Prix and yesterday. "So it was really quite a monumental moment for us as a team". On lap 18, Verstappen pitted for set of softs and thanks to a quick-fire stop, came out just ahead of Vettel despite being on the slower tyre, working to the advantage of Hamilton.
