Netflix ties longtime Emmy darling HBO in total wins

LOS ANGELES - "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" won the top prizes at the Emmy awards on Monday on a night of upsets for the highest honors in television and a triumph for streaming services.

"We solved it!" crooned "Saturday Night Live" nominees Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson, with back-up from pop stars John Legend and Ricky Martin - and even RuPaul - about the problem of diversity on the small screen.

"Maisel" took home the trophy by topping FX's "Atlanta"; HBO's "Barry", "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Silicon Valley"; ABC's "Black-ish"; and Netflix's "GLOW" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt". Arguably the lone viral moment came when award-winner Glenn Weiss proposed marriage to his girlfriend Jan Svendson during his acceptance speech.

Charlie Brooker's sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror was the victor of the Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special category, while The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story's Ryan Murphy landed the gong for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special. But Amazon also made its presence felt by almost sweeping the comedy balloting for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", leaving Hulu - thanks to "Thrones" regaining its throne - as the odd streamer out. "I think that you do need to strike a balance".

The Emmy Awards hit an all-time low - and not just in the ratings.

It's US TV's biggest party of the year, and this one is the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. The Saint Ignatius College Prep grad noted that his wife refused to join him at the Emmys because she didn't want to watch him lose. Peter Dinklage won for Game of Thrones, and Thandie Newton was chosen for her supporting role in sci-fi series Westworld.

SA court legalises private cannabis use
The judgement did not say how much cannabis one may have at home for private use. We still believe there are over 600 arrests for cannabis use.

The biggest award won by a broadcast network was "Saturday Night Live" for best variety sketch series.

John Oliver, victor of best variety talk series for his weekly HBO show "Last Week Tonight", applauded the network for its backing.

As a effect, the breezy tone and ebullient moments - which began with a promising song-and-dance number about strides in diversity within the TV industry, cheekily titled "We solved it" - gave way to lethargy and clunky ones.

"TV's biggest night" (as it less and less accurately is described) delivered a 7.4 rating in metered markets (per very preliminary numbers), down 10 percent from past year. He also won for directing.

Hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost couldn't drum up much enthusiasm for the proceedings.

The award for "So, They're Hosting Next Year, Right?" goes to-oh, wait, it's a tie!
