UK PM tells rebels: It’s my Brexit deal or no deal

Despite strong opposition in her Conservative party and criticism in Brussels, May has stuck by the so-called Chequers proposal to keep close trade ties with the European Union after Brexit on March 29 next year.

Mrs May has repeatedly said that the only alternative to her Chequers plan is a no deal scenario, an outcome with International Monetary Fund said could be disastrous for the UK's economy.

European Union leaders are due to meet in Salzburg in Austria on Wednesday and Thursday for talks that U.K. Brexit minister Dominic Raab has said would be an "important milestone".

The prime minister's Chequers plan had set out a vision of "ongoing harmonisation" with EU rules in an EU-UK "free trade area", paying "due regard" to EU courts, and paying "appropriate contributions" to the EU. Khan said Britain was now facing either a bad deal or a no-deal Brexit, both of which were "incredibly risky". "The only proposal that's been put forward that delivers on them not having that hard border and ensures we don't carve up the United Kingdom is the Chequers plan".

"This means that our relatives struggle to get visas to come to the UK for family celebrations, restaurants can not employ skilled chefs from overseas, our temples can not bring in priests, and we can not bring people in for business, cultural or sporting as well as the thousands of talented professionals like doctors, teachers and engineers", said Gujarati-origin Priti Patel, former UK Cabinet minister and a prominent pro-Brexit campaigner.

Ms Lagarde warned of a serious depreciation of the pound, reduced growth going forward, and an increased deficit which would rapidly decrease the size of the country's economy, all following a no deal Brexit.

In an interview with the BBC, the prime minister said that the vote in favour of Brexit in the June 2016 referendum was a vote to end this dual system of migration.

But even if she gets an accord in the coming weeks, it must be signed off on in parliament, where she can only muster a slender majority.

Keir Starmer, Labour's Brexit spokesman, said any EU deal must meet Labour's key Brexit tests, which include delivering the "exact same benefits" as Britain now has inside the single market and customs union.

"If they wanted to do that, they should have said to us - because there are open negotiations, the Joint Ministerial Committee is meeting - by the way, this is what we're saying as part of the Northern Irish deal".

Part of the reason behind the Prime Minister's hopes that a Brexit deal could be reached, is that the European Union has said it wants to "de-dramatise" the Northern Ireland border issue, now one of the biggest sticking points in Brexit negotiations.

'The plan that is on the table to take us forward, the plan that delivers on the Brexit vote but also protects jobs and maintains the unity of the United Kingdom is the Chequers plan.

Producing a possible new wrinkle in talks, a government-commissioned report said Britain should not offer preferential access to European Union workers over those from outside the bloc after Brexit. Hunt succeeded Johnson as foreign secretary in July.

"The whole thing is a constitutional abomination, and if Chequers were adopted it would mean that for the first time since 1066 our leaders were deliberately acquiescing in foreign rule", Johnson said, referring to the 11th Century invasion which established Norman rule over England.

French President Emmanuel Macron (R) chats with Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz after a meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris on September 17, 2018. "Of course, Boris Johnson doesn't agree with some of the policy decisions that she's taken, but Theresa May has to speak not just for the 52% who voted for Brexit, she has to speak for 100% of the country and she has to find a way that builds bridges and unifies the country and that's what I'm confident she will do".
