Uganda's pop star politician vows to fight on

Popular Ugandan politician Robert Kyagulanyi, better known by his pop star name Bobi Wine, on Thursday morning caused excitement at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) where he landed for a connecting flight to Uganda.

Police on Wednesday issued the guidelines to be followed when Bobi Wine, who has been in America, returns to Uganda.

Uganda's police chief, Martin Okoth Ochola, insisted that Kyagulanyi "is not under arrest".

Mr Sempala listed some eight journalists in police custody.

The Daily Monitor newspaper reported that police arrested him on the tarmac after he disembarked.

The BBC's Fergal Keane accompanied him into his home, where the MP said he had "come back to fight".

Security forces had deployed around the airport and the highway linking it to Kampala ahead of his arrival to prevent supporters from greeting him.

Since being elected to the National Assembly in 2017, 36-year-old Kyagulanyi has emerged as a spokesman for Ugandan youth and a virulent critic of President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986.

Ssentamu, who won a national assembly seat previous year, faces treason charges over his alleged role in an incident last month in which the president's convoy was pelted with stones.

Upon arrival, Kyagulanyi was separated from other passengers and bundled into a police vehicle without explanation.

They also said that all vehicles leaving Kampala on the road to Entebbe were checked at multiple roadblocks.

The return of Kyagulanyi, a 36-year old pop star and reggae musician turned legislator, has rattled the government headed by the 74-year-old Museveni, who leads a nation where almost 80 percent of the population is under the age of 30.

His supporters had earlier in the day defied a heavy security presence and gathered at his residence to welcome him, but once he arrived by police escort, security forces did not attempt to stop crowds from gathering at his home.

"The army and police have arrested me and other four colleagues, on our way to Entebbe Airport and have chose to detain us at Entebbe Police Station", Nubian posted on his facebook timeline.
