At Debate, O’Rourke Denies Trying to Flee Scene of DWI

With this ratings change, for the first time this cycle, Cook now estimates Democrats and Republicans are defending an equal number of Toss-Up Senate races: Florida, Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota for Democrats; Arizona, Nevada, Tennessee, and Texas for Republicans.

Cruz shot back that he became a Republican in part because of the party's support for civil rights, while Democrats in the South supported Jim Crow laws.

On Saturday, animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) handed out free barbecued tofu outside of a restaurant in Columbus, TX, where Republican Senator Ted Cruz held a event for his re-election campaign to the United States Senate.

"Dr. Christine Blasey Ford may testify about her allegations of attempted sexual assault against Judge Brett Kavanaugh", the debate moderator asked Cruz.

"I think Congressman O'Rourke is passionate, he is energetic, he believes what he is fighting for", Cruz said.

The candidates disagreed on several issues throughout the evening, including immigration, the future of health care and the legalization of marijuana. For however many voters were watching on a Friday night - when the focus of many Texans is on high school football - there was little appeal from either candidate to a middle ground.

O'Rourke recorded 0.136 and 0.134 blood alcohol levels on Breathalyzer tests, the records said. Cruz said survivors told him they do not want gun control and instead want more armed police officers in schools.

Labiosa agreed, noting his organization and others continue to help Puerto Ricans recover from Maria and Irma. The local government decreed a day of mourning to remember hurricane victims on Thursday.

O'Rourke responded that the accusation was "simply not true". Cruz challenged that stance saying O'Rourke is basically attacking all law enforcement with his statement. He suggested those were supported by "gunowners and non-gunowners alike", but when he said the common GOP refrain after gun violence of offering "thoughts and prayers" wasn't enough, Cruz bristled. Even the latest polls are at odds over who's in the lead.

"I'm sorry you don't like thoughts and prayers", he said. "I will pray for anyone in harm's way, but I will also do something about it". Ted Cruz, contradicted police reports Friday by denying he tried to flee the scene of a 1998 drunken auto crash.

The second debate between Cruz and O'Rourke is set for September 30 at the University of Houston.

Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.); O'Rourke did what he could to distance himself from modern Democrats. Though he may not knock off Cruz, the argument goes, a close loss could only further boost his national profile.

"You were the runner up in the Republican primary for president, you ran against then NY businessman Donald Trump".

A Reuters poll of the race found O'Rourke leading 47 to 45 among likely voters, the first poll to ever show him ahead - although a Quinnipiac poll released just hours earlier gave Cruz a 54 to 45 likely voter lead. And polls have suggested a tighter race than expected in a state where Republicans typically win in landslides.
