Better Living Through Evolution: Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Enzymes produced through directed evolution are used to manufacture everything from biofuels to pharmaceuticals.

The victor of the Nobel Peace Prize is to be announced Friday and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be revealed Monday.

Nobel chemistry laureate George Smith, reached at his home in Columbia, Missouri, was quick to credit the work of others in his prize.

Over the last 40 years, the King Faisal Prize has been successful in recognizing outstanding researchers and scientists from all over the world.

"Twenty-five years ago, [this technology] was considered the lunatic fringe", Arnold explained in a 2014 interview marking her induction to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. "It's happenstance. That was certainly the case with my work", he said.

That setback set the stage for a new vision - using evolution to redesign enzymes for use in biotechnology - that earned Arnold the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry today.

Arnold is the first Princeton alumna (female graduate of either the undergraduate program or the Graduate School) to win a Nobel Prize, and the second woman associated with the University to win a Nobel Prize; the first was Toni Morrison, Princeton's Robert F. Goheen Professor in the Humanities, Emerita, who won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature. "Mine was an idea in a line of research that built very naturally on the lines of research that went before".

Melania Trump kicks off Africa tour in Ghana
But just hours earlier, Mrs Trump was also pictured beaming widely on a well-received trip to the Ghanian capita of Accra. Melania Trump is visiting a former slave holding facility on the coast of Ghana on the second day of her Africa tour.

At a time when gender bias in the sciences is under scrutiny as never before Arnold's win makes her the first woman to take the chemistry prize since Ada Yonath in 2009 for her work on the ribosome's inner workings.

Arnold, Smith and Winter will receive their prize from Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's 1896 death.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the year 2018 has been announced. Essentially, Winter used the phage technology in order to engineer new "antibodies" in the bacteria - large proteins that are used by the immune system to fight harmful bacteria and viruses.

The Nobel victor, who has openly called himself a "post-Zionist", caused uproar in 2015 after getting the university to allow him teach a course called "Perspectives on Zionism".

"What always amazes me about Frances is she's such a powerhouse - she gets so much done", said Michael Hecht, a professor of chemistry at Princeton and a longtime friend of Arnold. I smile recalling that, but up to that point she had been trying to modify enzymes (proteins that do chemistry) by thinking carefully about the effects certain changes to their amino-acid sequences ought to have. They were the wish of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who established the organization that provides money for the prizes.

Earlier this week, two immunologists, James Allison of the USA and Tasuku Honjo of Japan, won the Nobel Medicine Prize for research into how the body's natural defences can fight cancer.

Strickland won the 2018 Nobel Prize for Physics for breakthroughs in the field of lasers on Tuesday alongside French scientist Gerard Mourou.
