Pence to address China in Hudson Institute speech

Vice President Mike Pence launched a broad attack against Beijing Thursday, accusing China of "predatory" economic practices, military aggression against the United States and of trying to undermine President Donald Trump and harm his chances of winning re-election.

Pence delivered a 40-minute speech at the conservative think tank the Hudson Institute giving the Trump administration's views on China.

Amid unprecedented tensions between the two nations, Pence accused China of trying, among other things, to influence the midterm elections to the extent that all the efforts perpetually undertaken by malicious Russian actors to obfuscate American minds and undermine U.S. democracy "pales" in comparison.

After Trump's remark, intelligence and homeland security experts said they didn't know of any Chinese influence operations akin to Russian activities during the 2016 presidential election.

One of the most pressing concerns is Beijing's control over the supply of critical technologies and materials, which could pose a significant risk to USA industries that are vital to national security, the report said.

"There can be no doubt - China is meddling in America's democracy". Nor has any official said election infrastructure has been targeted by China or any other foreign adversary, though several have stressed that a number of foreign actors have the will and the capability to engage in election interference. China responded with $60bn in tariffs on American products.

-China provides money to USA universities, think tanks and scholars with the understanding that they will avoid ideas that the Communist Party finds offensive, Pence said. Beijing, of course, has been open about its opposition to new tariffs imposed by Trump and has made no mystery about its strategy of letting US farming communities and other industries understand that its economic retaliation would be targeted at Trump's political base.

"The worldwide community has already known fully well who wantonly infringes upon others' sovereignty, interferes in others' internal affairs and undermines others' interests".

Pence also denounced Beijing's crackdown on minority Muslims in the Xinjiang region. The Vice President also challenged Beijing's vision for the Chinese people's future, noting that Taiwan's "embrace of democracy" shows a "better path" for the entire Asian nation.

It was Axios, in fact, which last month reported that the White House had "secret anti-China plans" that, based on administration sources, would be launched in the weeks ahead.

He criticized China for its militarization of the South China Sea, its trade practices and intellectual property theft, its crackdown on political opposition and religious groups at home and its political interference in the US and around the world.

"Despite such reckless harassment, the United States Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever worldwide law allows and our national interests demand", Pence said.

Mr Pence called the confrontation "reckless harassment".

The latest incident in the South China Sea comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing, and the situation could soon worsen, as the USA military is reportedly considering a proposal for a major show of force as a warning to the Chinese, which perceive American actions moves to contain Chinese power.
