Montserrat Caballe passed away at the Sant Pau Hospital in the Catalan capital, aged 85.

The Royal Opera House said it was "saddened" to hear of the death of Caballe, who was born into a working class family in Barcelona and was singing Bach cantatas at the age of seven.

Spanish media said that Caballe entered the hospital in September because of a gall bladder problem.

She starred in 90 opera roles with almost 4,000 stage performances, after unveiling her musical talents early, singing Bach cantatas at the age of seven.

Her voice was described by her fans as inspirational, legendary and not of this world.
