The Ballon d'Or is separate from FIFA's own world player of the year awards, which was won by Real Madrid's Croatian midfielder Luka Modric.

Benzema's inclusion comes as something of a surprise, the 30-year-old having scored just five LaLiga goals throughout last season as Madrid finished 17 points behind champions Barcelona.

Today, France Football magazine are revealing their 30-man shortlist for the prestigious prize.

Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo have been named on the shortlist for the 2018 Ballon d'Or.

Kante was also part of France's victorious side in Russian Federation, while Isco helped Real Madrid to win a third consecutive Champions League.

Manchester City's all time top goalscorer has been nominated for the award after his fine club form, where he won the Premier League, EFL Cup and the Community Shield at the Etihad.

Men's shortlist so far: are Sergio Aguero from Argentina, Manchester City; Alisson Becker from Brazil, Liverpool; Gareth Bale from Wales, Real Madrid; Karim Benzema from France, Real Madrid.

Courtois is included after a season in which he won the FA Cup with Chelsea and came third at the World Cup with Belgium - winning the Golden Glove - before he moved to Real Madrid.

Having lost out in the Federation Internationale de Football Association best player of the year award to Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo takes his place among the 30 nominees for the Ballon d'Or that were being unveiled in stages throughout Monday.
