China Open: Osaka survives huge scare to reach semis

China Open: Osaka survives huge scare to reach semis

Anastasija Sevastova and Caroline Wozniacki will contest the final of this year's China Open in Beijing after both recorded straight sets victories on Saturday. Asked at the post-match press conference, where she again looked unhappy, why she had had tears in her eyes on court, she replied curtly, "Because it was a hard match".

"Wozniacki takes home 30th career title at China Open and 40th win of the season!"

Denmark's Wozniacki was impressive all week, never dropping a set and rarely looking troubled, sealing her spot in the WTA Finals Singapore in the process.

Wozniacki claimed her first China Open title in 2010 when she jumped to top the WTA rankings for the first time.

Naomi Osaka powered into the semifinals of the China Open on Friday with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over hometown favorite Zhang Shuai.

"As a little kid I had a dream of becoming a professional tennis player, becoming number one in the world".

In the men's final, Juan Martin del Potro faced Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia. "I hope that we will continue to have good matches", Sevastova said.

This was Osaka's second tournament since she defeated Serena Williams in the US Open final on September 8. Caroline played unbelievable today, it's always tough playing against her and I have never won.

"But my back's sort of been bothering me since the beginning of the tournament".

"I also want to thank and apologise to Anastasija for today".

"Having done everything, all of that, it's pretty wonderful".
